It is paramount for people to know about their whereabout existance, contributions and roles in this ecosystem we share. Ultimately, is to record every single species of ladybird we posses and embark a local or perhaps a national conservation project for them.. Don't let them go extinct while we can still have the chance to save them!JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.comBlogger41125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-60905471886295752922012-04-20T06:56:00.002-07:002012-04-20T06:57:23.915-07:00Bioinformatic Approach for CoccinellidaeJOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-27364993699621580732011-10-20T05:28:00.000-07:002011-10-20T05:34:52.231-07:00EpilachninaeA. Epilachna indica

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-89105006841958974992011-10-18T20:43:00.000-07:002011-10-19T03:08:14.754-07:00A Coccinellid Encounter at School
This morning when I was fertilizing the vegetable seedlings at the school garden, I bumped into a bizarre looking coccinellid crawling up and down the sunflowers. The coccinellid was a reddish-orange one about 2 mm long. The body shape was quite oval but, I could not tell the genus nor the species at all. Therefore, I caught it, put it in a small vial. I will bring it home for a further identification. Macro-sized pictures will be taken as soon as I get home.

Back again. The pictures have been taken. Take a look at the SCYMNINAE icon at the LOCAL SUBFAMILIES CATEGORY.

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-51821588624138736692011-10-14T07:35:00.000-07:002011-10-16T07:41:45.735-07:00Interactive Learning with Ladybird MorphologyLet's learn some important morphologies of a ladybird...

A. The same thing goes to me when I first time handled a beetle not knowing whether it was a coccinellid or otherwise especially those which are not regarded as 'ladybird'. Therefore, scientists have come up with few morphological characteristics to define and distinguish a coccinellid from other beetle.

Morphological Characteristics

A. Body shape : rounded or oval, dorsally convex (dome-shaped), nearly flat on the ventral
(bottom)

B. Pronotum : often conceals the head from the above, and may be look like a head.

C. Antennae : short or very short with 8-11 segments; last 3-6 segments form a weak club.

D. Tarsal formula : 4-4-4 but appears 3-3-3. In other words, each lower leg appears to have
three segments.

E. First abdominal sternite : entirely not divided by hind coxae (charactersitic of suborder
polyphaga of the Coleoptera)

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-58213630552127294482011-10-13T07:40:00.000-07:002011-10-21T00:58:42.610-07:00COCCINELLINAEA. Menochilus sexmaculatus

<img style="cursor:pointer; There are many proposed systems of the groupings in Coccinellidae family; among these, the important systems were by Sasaji (1971a), Fursch (1990), Kovar (1996), Hovek & Honek (1996), and the latest one by Splinski (2007). But a proposed classification of Coccinellidae worldwide was by Klovar (1996) though many ammendments have been made to this system since then due to some limitations to this system. Therefore, I opt to choose that of by Kovar (1996).

<td I found an interesting illustration on ladybird color patterns by an entomologist, Natalia Vandenberg @ (2009). This would be of great help for my ladybird identification.

I finally ran into an article on spider mites eating coccinellid (subfamily: Scymninae; tribe: Stethorini) (Biddinger et al., 2009). In brief, the tribe of Stethorini Dobzhansky consists about 90 species recorded worldwide with only two important genera, Stethorus Weis and Parastethorus Pang & Mao. Both of the adults and larvae of this coccinellid have evolved to specialize on spider mites (mainly Tetranychidae) and also the false spider mites (Tenuipalpididae). These spider mites are economically important agricultural pests. Geographically, Stethorini is cosmopolitan that exist around the world in many different climates ranging from tropical rainforests to temperate deciduous forests and plain to colder northern regions of Europe, Canada and Russia. They exhibit a wide range of habitats including many agricultural crops. However, none of the species has been ever recorded in Malaysia. Generally, the adults have dull body coloration with some hairs, pubescent, black with brown or yellow legs and antennae. They are all small (1-1.5mm). Like many other coccinellid larvae, the larvae of this tribe undergo four stadia (stages) before emerging into adults. Here are some of the pictures of coccinellids yet I regarded as 'stethorini' from my collection. However it is not confirmed yet.

And I am very intrigued with one species of coccinellid as shown in the pictures.. I have already mentioned this species before in the gallery. At first, I did not believe that it was a coccinellid species because they were found wandering on the leaves around the whitefly colonies. However, from my observation, the beetles are still there at the whitefly colonies and sometimes i saw them residing in the whiteflies' patches. So, I believe that this would be regarded as a 'coccinellid'. Then again, need to be ID under microscope .. but right now, I will regard this as a 'coccinellid' species until then..

It has an elongate, fusiform body just like that of zig-zag ladybird and transverse ladybird larvae but the spots are white. The body is entirely black, on its mesothorax, there are 2 small white spots each at the edge, same thing goes to the methathorax, first abdominal tergum and the fourth. I wish I could put some pictures on it here but I still have no digital microscope....Fortunately, I am good at drawing and had a draw of it... Will scan it and put it on here...I am keeping it to see what species it is later... I think it feeds on mites since it does not bother to eat aphids which I gave to it.. Ill just have my fingers crossed...
JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-26809397962497800422011-04-14T01:08:00.000-07:002011-04-14T01:15:07.338-07:00Digital Microscope
It has been a while and been really busy with work at school..Finally I got the chance to update the blog... An Ambition or just a Dream?
It has been almost two years since I wrote down the first post on the Malaysian Ladybird survey. This was the biggest and the hardest plan I always wanted to carry out. The objective of the survey is to identify the existance of our local ladybird species in the country, to record them down and make a documentary on them. This is crucial as to my opinion, there must be an attempt to be taken for saving our local species. I have tried to introduce this blog to the fellow members of the Malaysian Tarantula Society but so far there was no positive feedback. I realized it is extremely difficult to draw attentions from the public since not many have this biodiversity awareness. Nevertheless, I will not give up on this and hopefully through this blog will make people understand and help to nurture the awareness of caring our local ladybrid species in the soceity.
JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-40705276908252942742011-01-14T06:12:00.000-08:002011-01-14T06:58:59.946-08:00Potential Insectary Plant for Ladybirds?

In the picture on the left side, you can see a patch of goosegrasses (Eleusine indica) with flowers. It can be found almost any places around the world. In Malaysia, it is called 'rumput sambau'. This species is known for its notorious property in that it is an invasive species of weed in cultivated crops, lawns and golf courses. It thrives in disturbed areas with compacted soils in full sun. Both tillage and herbicides are used in its control. This low-growing grass is capable of setting seed even when closely mowed. Some populations have evolved resistance to certain herbicides, including glyphosphate. However, to me this weed is a potential insectary plant to attract a wide variety of ladybird species. This is due to the presence of ragi aphid or eleusine aphid (Hysteroneura setariae) (picture on the right) as this weed is the food plant for them. This is true after I conducted an experiment using the weeds intercopped with chilis whereby the weeds significantly attracted many different kinds of ladybird species within a period of time in response to the abundance of ragi aphid. It was an interesting finding but to further promote the efficient use of the weeds in cultivated crops, one needs to study the ladybirds' movement in and out of the crops for this type of intercropping system. So, now we have an insectary plant to attract ladybirds to our lawn. What are you waiting for guys?? Say no to pesticides and 3 hips for organic farming!
JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-1803683758351108582010-09-20T20:11:00.000-07:002011-01-14T03:16:43.352-08:00Ladybirds are really plastic...
I bought a book on the 'Ecology of Coccinellidae' by Hodek & Honek (1996). In the book, it says there's no record of a global extinction of ladybird species yet. This is because of their great mobility and the plasticity of their life cycle. In other word, even though ladybirds have existed for 280 million years long before the dinosaur age, they can still easily adapt with the ever changing environment and up to these days, ladybirds can survive in man-made surroundings, such as in agricultural plantations and even in urban cities. This explains the reason I could find a zig-zag ladybird feeding on ragi aphid on goosegrass growing next to a chemicals manufacturing factory and as well as a variable ladybird perching on a leaf of ornamental plant right in the middle of Bukit Bintang side walk!

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-44013870176110439442009-08-02T02:20:00.000-07:002011-01-14T03:23:30.866-08:00Ladybird: First Insect In Outer Space
I always wanted to share this compelling story about the first insect in outer space. At least, I could brag something about my favorite insect. Ladybirds were the first insect sent to outer space along with aphids. I have not got the chance to go up there, but they were lucky to be taken up by a group of scientists for a research purpose. It happened in July 1999 when four ladybirds and a group of aphids were taken on the space shuttle Leo. Basically, they were part of a student (US & Chile)-designed experiment whereby their effectiveness in controlling aphids in a zero gravity environment was investigated. The result was fruitful in which it indicated that ladybirds could successfully prey on aphids even in a zero gravity condition. This showed that ladybird could be a good biocontrol agent of agricultural pests in outer space if we are to establish our own earth-like environment in any parts of terrestrial planets in the future. You can read more on Ladybugs in Space, unfortunately, the site could not be accessed.

Zoom, zoom ladybugss.....

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-33758530772665645122009-08-01T06:37:00.000-07:002009-08-01T08:35:24.168-07:00Ladybird Breeding and Rearing Techniques
I want to share on how to breed and rear ladybird (aphidophagous ladybird <aphid eating="" ladybird="">) easily at home for study or observation purposes. The techniques are rather easy and suit for everyone (insect maniacs, enthusiasts, amateur entomologist or maybe the professional one lol). I have been practicing the method for some time and managed to produce up to three to four generations per time. Note that I came up with the technique based on the scientific experiments but I modified them according to my needs. I can say that the techniques can be good to produce generations of ladybirds in small quantity and suit for tropical climate since you can easily get aphid sources all year round in the wild whithout needing to rear them. The most crucial part of the technique is to get as many food supply (aphids generally) as you can for the adults and the larvae (baby ladybirds). So here are the following techniques:</aphid>

A. Getting Eggs

The first step is to get the eggs. Usually I collect male and female ladybirds from the wild and keep them in a small vial together provided with ample food supply; of course the aphids. There are many sources to get the food, I recommend you to look for aphids on goosegrass (Eleusine indica); plenty with ragi aphid (the red small insects), on chili plants (look under the old and young leaves, the tip is if you see many ants crawling up and down; it indicates there is a presence of the aphid colony), on brinjal and ladyfingers (under the leaves), or on sugar cane (plenty of aphids). If you cannot find them on these plants, try the maize plant (on the leaves, flowers). However, if you cannot find these plants at all, try to look on Exora (bunga jarum). I feed my ladybirds usually with the aphids found on Exora since it is easy to obtain (the plants are planted around my house). If fail to do so, just try to find goosegrass ok! Abundance! Once you get the food, feed them continuously until they finally mate. Mating occurs for several hours up to 3 days consecutively. In fact I have observed the male kept mating the female for two days straight (No stopping)! The female will soon lay eggs maybe around one or two days later. Still, food is very crucial at this time.

B. Egg Transferring

After the female lays her eggs in the vial, I usually transfer them into a 10 cm * 10 cm plastic case with sub cases so that the eggs can be placed one by one in each sub case. This is because larva ladybird is cannibal and readily eats other eggs after hatching. I do this like 30 to 60 minutes after egg oviposition. The case then is sealed with a plastic wrapper. I normally use Chinese brush or watercolor brush to transfer the eggs each into the case. I dip the brush in bowl of water and then rub the eggs off with the wet brush slowly and gently. Do not be harsh as you can damage the eggs. Seal the case with a plastic wrapper and make some small holes on it. From my experience, most eggs will hatch after two or three days. So, prepare the food all the time. Usually after hatching, the larva sits on or nearby the egg case and sucks up eveything left from the egg. So , you can have this time around to get the food. After an hour or 1.5 hr (depends on the condition), if the larva does not get any food, it will soon die out of hunger. After a week of feeding, the larva will increase in size as you can observe the differences. Once it gets bigger, try to transfer it once more into a bigger vial, to provide it with a space to pupate. The pupa takes about 4 - 5 days to develop into an adult depends on the species.

C. Summary of Egg Collecting and Transferring

As you can see from the picture, the first step is to obtain the eggs, then the second step is to transfer the eggs into the plastic case using Chinese brush dipped in water. Finally, transfer the larva as it gets bigger into a bigger vial to provide space to pupate. After pupating, it takes 4 - 5 days to develop into an adult.

Happy Trying!

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-7051809405073960182009-07-29T22:05:00.000-07:002011-01-14T01:23:10.634-08:00Eureka Finding of Maculate Ladybird (Harmonia octamaculata)
I went to get some food for the pairs at the vege garden in UPM this morning and accidentally ran into Maculate ladybirds!. That was a fascinating finding! I have been looking for them for a year already and finally I found them. They could not be found within the vege garden (JPT) before, instead, this morning, they were found on a grassy area (at the edge of the garden). I managed to collect five of them on goosegrass (Eleusine indica) while they were feeding on Eleusine aphid (Hysteroneura setariae). At first, I thought it was a Transverse ladybird since the coloration was almost similar. Then, I got down on my knee and put them into a vial. Goodness! The size was big, even bigger than that of Transverse ladybird; almost as the same as the size of Harmonia sedecimpunctata. Then, when I checked the marking patterns on its prothorax and elytra, I realized I have seen this markings before and it belonged to that of Maculate ladybird.

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-5686849716072013482009-07-29T17:57:00.000-07:002009-08-01T07:31:12.233-07:00CiB1 is a Female!

Yesterday evening, I made a simple copulation test to investigate the sex of CiB1. I caught four wild Coelophora inaequalis and placed the females (spotted and spotless formae) and the males (spotless and spectabilis formae) into separate vials. Firstly, I tested the males with CiB1; I put one spotless male ladybird together in one vial along with well-fed CiB1 and voila!; when they came into contact with each other, the spotless male immediately grabed CiB1 on the back and started beating its antennae on the CiB1's elytra. Afterwards, the male lowered the tip of its abdomen as if it wanted to attach it to the tip of CiB1's abdomen. After the two minute copulation, mating finally took place and I was very sure now that CiB1 was a female. I released the rest of the ladybirds and sticked to the male spotless ladybird. The mating took place for two hours on and off. This morning, I woke up and saw they were still mating lol! (there is a reason for this). I checked the food (aphids) and still they were plenty but seemed like I would have to get some more today. I look forward to getting the eggs for my next observation.

CiB1 (melanic one) is definitely a female!

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-55220085308998052732009-07-23T17:19:00.000-07:002009-08-01T07:21:21.922-07:00My First Indoor-Bred Melanic Form Coelophora inequalis
Yesterday evening, when I got off from work, I noticed that the pupa of Coelophora inequalis was empty which was reared from an egg previously obtained from a caught female melanic C. inequalis in UPM. In the last observation, I mated a spotted C. inaequalis and the melanic form together and collected 12 eggs. However, only one egg survived up to the adult stage while the rest only made up to the 2nd larval stage. This meant that the ladybird was my first indoor-bred C. inaequalis and the interesting part was, the ladybird was a melanic forma. I named the ladybird, CiB1. I kept feeding CiB1 with lots of ragi aphid to maintain it before finding out the sex. If it is a female then, I would try to mate it with a wild male spectabilis form of C. inaequalis to get the eggs and observe the frequency and ratio of the melanic form. If it is a male, then I would have to wait for one indoor-breed spectabilis female (there is a reason for this). For this first observation, I would mate the indoor-bred melanic form with a spectabilis form of C. inaequalis. Progress will be updated soon...

You can see the melanic (black) ladybird is CiB1. I bet (she) is so adorable. The spotless orange type is the wild male.

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-54514911728912049742009-07-13T23:00:00.000-07:002009-07-16T22:17:04.313-07:00Melanic form of Variable Ladybird (continue from the previous post)

A ; B

C; D

A. My first observation: Mating the black form (previously thought as Curinus coeroelous) with the spectabilis form of Coelophora inaequalis: And it took place!. So, the black form was not Curinus coeroleous after all! Instead it was the melanic form of Coelophora inaequalis. I was lucky to collect it since, during my previous observations, I have never come across the melanic form, not even once, all I have usually encountered were the spectabilis, spotless orange color and spotted formae. In one book on Indonesian ladybirds, it stated that there is a melanic form of Coelophora inaequalis. So, I was very sure that the one that I caught was the melanic form. I am waiting for another two obersevations....

JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5825363712909080576.post-90258194251930799032009-07-13T02:05:00.000-07:002009-07-13T02:10:27.591-07:00Malaysian Ladybird Pictures
Finally, I managed to post up all the ladybird pictures from my mini collection. The scientific names are not all correct and accurate, since I am not a taxonomist. Most of them are based on that of Dr. J. Poorani's website and the Indonesian ladybird book (old book). So far, i have collected more than 20 species. Hope this can be a good start to embark a survey or studies on Malaysian ladybirds or to make a book on them in the future.
JOENTOhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15100193033431018853noreply@blogger.com0
